I am passionate about connecting people to stories.

I currently work as the Deputy Editor for AVENUE Magazine, a monthly lifestyle magazine in New York City that focuses on Manhattan's society crowd.

Previously, I was the associate editor at Dan's Papers, a weekly publication based on the East End of Long Island. I took on a number of project management roles, including overseeing all content creation for the newly launched Dan’s Papers Montauk Section, as well as all promotional editorial content for the three Dan’s Papers summer food and wine events.

I enjoy the challenge of developing and editing stories and crafting catchy, effective headlines. I’m passionate about health, fitness, sports and lifestyle topics, organizations and campaigns.

My writing has won numerous awards. I received a 2015 Fair Media Council Folio Award for my piece on fashion icon Donna Karan and her Urban Zen Integrative Therapy program. In addition, I was named Sports Writer of the Year by the New York Press Association in 2012.

As a freelance writer for Dan’s Papers, I continue to contribute a popular weekly fitness column, Keep Fit. I ground current topics and trends in the local community and present issues in a way that most appeals to the Dan’s Papers audience. I have interviewed nationally known athletes and celebrities, drawing in readers by presenting unique details about each personality and his or her relationship with the East End of Long Island.

I graduated from Wake Forest University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and a minor in journalism. I am currently attending Columbia University part-time to pursue my masters in Strategic Communications, where I am learning how to most effectively adapt my communications skills to the ever-changing business environment.

Raised on the East End of Long Island, I can frequently be seen running, stand up paddleboarding and attending fitness classes in the New York metro area. I most recently completed an 18-mile stand up paddleboarding adventure from Montauk Point, NY to Block Island, RI to raise money for local nonprofits.

Previously, I was a Web Producer at Fox Sports Florida, where I edited and posted stories on FoxSportsFlorida.com and developed an acute passion for all things sports.

I’m interested in freelance writing, making new connections and exploring new opportunities in communications. Contact me at kmlaffey@gmail.com.
